This prayer is a continuation of the Shema and is found in Deuteronomy 6:5-9 and Numbers 15:40-41. In traditional communities, it also includes Deuteronomy 11:13-21 (which explains the consequences for following or disregarding God’s commandments) and Numbers 15:37-39 (text regarding tzitzit).

The Mah Tovu comes from Numbers 24:5 and Psalms 5:8, 26:8, 95:6 and 69:14. It is customary to recite the Mah Tovu as you enter the synagogue or shortly after. This prayer helps express the appreciation for being able to come together and worship.

Hineh mah tov umanayim shevet achim gam yachad! Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for people to dwell together in unity! -Psalm 133:1 This verse is often recited or sung as a part of Shabbat (Sabbath) or other gatherings. It emphasizes the beauty and importance of unity among people.
