David sinned greatly against the LORD, but was called "a man after God's own heart" ... how is that? What makes all the difference is how we respond to conviction and correction: either with humility and confession, or pride and excuses.

5. Darkness

Psalm 88 is the darkest of the Psalms of lamentation. It begins and ends with sadness, and deep darkness. We are comforted that this Psalm reaches into the worst places of our lives, and we know that even there, God is with us. Jesus knows this kind of darkness even more fully than we do on our worst days. He endured full abandonment of God, so that we could enjoy the fullness of adoption by God.

To look forward with faith, we must look back and remember God's faithfulness. This Psalm calls for us to not forget God like Israel did, but instead to remember and remind one another, and to tell of God's goodness to the coming generations.
