As their disappointment diminished their hope, it was impossible for the disciples on the road to Emmaus to see God still with them. Likewise, our own disappointments can diminish our hope and impair our ability to see God’s presence with us. It is through this story that we can see how God is still working in the world today.

Thomas expressed his doubt about the resurrection of Jesus and then did something counter intuitive. He held his doubt while remaining in the community of faith. Doubt is sure to be present in the community of faith, but rather than leave and give up on faith during times of doubt, we can stay and let the community hold faith for us. God’s presence in such communities can enable a resurrection of a new and deeper faith.
