Woke

Civility

September 1, 2019 • Jim White

If there's a single word that has emerged on the cultural scene of late demanding attention, it's "woke." It used to mean just being "with it" - on top of things, knowing what's going on. Of late, it's taken on a more focused meaning, specifically being awakened to social injustice - particularly racism. Our country is involved in a deepening crisis of division, often with people talking past each other or, even worse, at each other. Yet the church is called to be the new community where there is neither "Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28, NIV). What does this vision mean for the church today and our mission and message to the world? What is race all about anyway, going all the way back to creation? What is the true nature of racism? What would a culture of civility actually entail? If Jesus took on race relations, racial divides, racial reconciliation, racial....everything, what would that look like? In this three-week series, senior pastor Jim White returns from his summer study break to speak into the most pressing cultural issue of our day.
