Reading, Meditation and Prayer for Each Weekday

St. Mark 2024

How beautiful on the mountains     are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace,     who bring good tidings,     who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion,     “Your God reigns!” 8  Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices;     together they shout for joy. When the Lord returns to Zion,     they will see it with their own eyes. 9  Burst into songs of joy together,     you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord has comforted his people,     he has redeemed Jerusalem. 10  The Lord will lay bare his holy arm     in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see     the salvation of our God.

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial 27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd,     and the sheep will be scattered.’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+14%3a26-31&version=niv#fen-niv-24782a] 28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.” 30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+14%3a26-31&version=niv#fen-niv-24785b] you yourself will disown me three times.” 31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?” 14 I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore, “they are before the throne of God     and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne     will shelter them with his presence. 16  ‘Never again will they hunger;     never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=revelation+7%3a13-17&version=niv#fen-niv-30828a]     nor any scorching heat. 17  For the Lamb at the center of the throne     will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=revelation+7%3a13-17&version=niv#fen-niv-30829b]     ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=revelation+7%3a13-17&version=niv#fen-niv-30829c]”

5 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. 5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud     but shows favor to the humble.”

4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.

Thursday, April 18

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland. 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.” 27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.” 28 He added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.” 29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care. 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?” 31 “What shall I give you?” he asked. “Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages. 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen.” 34 “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.” 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons. 36 Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks. 37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. 38 Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches, 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob. 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

9 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it. 12 Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. 13 These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either. 14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. 15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Tuesday, April 16

Then I will return to my lair     until they have borne their guilt     and seek my face— in their misery     they will earnestly seek me.” 6  “Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces     but he will heal us; he has injured us     but he will bind up our wounds. 2  After two days he will revive us;     on the third day he will restore us,     that we may live in his presence. 3  Let us acknowledge the Lord;     let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises,     he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains,     like the spring rains that water the earth.” 4  “What can I do with you, Ephraim?     What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist,     like the early dew that disappears. 5  Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets,     I killed you with the words of my mouth—     then my judgments go forth like the sun.[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=hosea+5%3a15%e2%80%946%3a6+&version=niv#fen-niv-22173a] 6  For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,     and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

Monday, April 15

10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister. More on Love and Hatred 11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+john+3%3a10-16&version=niv#fen-niv-30593a] if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

Friday, April 12

26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him. God’s Children and Sin 28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

Thursday, April 11

Answer me when I call, O God of my right!     You gave me room when I was in distress.     Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer. 2  How long, you people, shall my honor suffer shame?     How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah 3  But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;     the Lord hears when I call to him. 4  When you are disturbed,[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=psalm+4&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-13970a] do not sin;     ponder it on your beds, and be silent. Selah 5  Offer right sacrifices,     and put your trust in the Lord. 6  There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!     Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!” 7  You have put gladness in my heart     more than when their grain and wine abound. 8  I will both lie down and sleep in peace,     for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.

Wednesday, April 10

18 Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+12%3a18-27&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-24686a] shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no children, 21 and the second married the widow[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+12%3a18-27&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-24688b] and died, leaving no children, and the third likewise; 22 none of the seven left children. Last of all the woman herself died. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise,[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+12%3a18-27&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-24690c] whose wife will she be? For all seven had married her.” 24 Jesus said to them, “Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven. 26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is God not of the dead but of the living; you are quite wrong.”

Tuesday, April 9

I am writing to you, dear children,     because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. 13  I am writing to you, fathers,     because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men,     because you have overcome the evil one. 14  I write to you, dear children,     because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers,     because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men,     because you are strong,     and the word of God lives in you,     and you have overcome the evil one. On Not Loving the World 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20john%202%3a12-17&version=niv#fen-niv-30566a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Monday, April 8

3 Now by this we know that we have come to know him, if we obey his commandments. 4 Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” but does not obey his commandments is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; 5 but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we know that we are in him: 6 whoever says, “I abide in him,” ought to walk in the same way as he walked. A New Commandment 7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+john+2%3a3-11&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-30541a] the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. 10 Whoever loves a brother or sister abides in the light, and in such a person[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+john+2%3a3-11&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-30543b] there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates a brother or sister is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness.

Friday, April 5

23 After they were released, they went to their own people and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard it, they raised their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, 25 it is you who said by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant:[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=acts+4%3a23-31&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-27037a] ‘Why did the gentiles rage     and the peoples imagine vain things? 26  The kings of the earth took their stand,     and the rulers have gathered together         against the Lord and against his Messiah.’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=acts+4%3a23-31&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-27038b] 27 “For in this city, in fact, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the gentiles and the peoples of Israel, gathered together against your holy servant[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=acts+4%3a23-31&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-27039c] Jesus, whom you anointed, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=acts+4%3a23-31&version=nrsvue#fen-nrsvue-27042d] Jesus.” 31 When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.
