Philanthropy and Charity

Dan Pallotta

Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let's change the way we think about changing the world. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

Hilde Schwab

The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship provides platforms at the country, regional and global levels to promote social entrepreneurship. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 1998. Its purpose is to "advance social entrepreneurship and to foster social entrepreneurs as an important catalyst for societal innovation and progress."[1] The Foundation is under the legal supervision of the Swiss Federal Government. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. Each year the Foundation selects 20-25 Social Entrepreneurs through a global “ Social Entrepreneur of the Year” competition. The Foundation encourages community building between the activists it identifies. (260 people in 2013). It tries to encourage the spread of ideas and providing backing from corporations and political, academic and communication leaders. The chosen social entrepreneurs are included in the Forum's initiatives and they serve on the Forum’s Global Agenda Councils. The Foundation works with selected companies to advance activities of social entrepreneurs and initiatives that support social entrepreneurship. The Foundation identifies rising social entrepreneurs under the age of 40 through its Forum of Young Global Leaders. Scholarship opportunities for executive education opportunities are offered to selected social entrepreneurs in conjunction with Harvard and Stanford Universities and INSEAD. Case studies on specific social entrepreneurs are provided to leading academic institutions to incorporate into undergraduate and graduate level courses.[1]

The Founding Father of Social Entrepreneurship Speaks

Bill Drayton, founder and CEO of Ashoka

Bill Drayton, founder and CEO of Ashoka, literally coined the term “social entrepreneur” when he founded the nonprofit back in 1980, almost 40 years ago. He also decided that changemaker was one word and not two, something the Oxford dictionary now recognizes (though Webster’s does not, to the Drayton’s consternation). Drayton says, “We all sense that society is at a profound, indeed historic turning point.” Before we explore the turning point, he’s talking about, let’s briefly review some of the history of Ashoka and social entrepreneurship. The kernel of the idea for Ashoka came to Drayton, he says, when he was visiting India at age 18. On this journey, he began to appreciate that an entrepreneur could make systemic changes that could have profound implications in the lives of large numbers of people. He also began to appreciate how difficult it is to make that leap at almost any point in one’s life. Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/34g2l03.
