James 1:22-25

Mark of a Genuine believer

James 1:18-27

I. Who are the self deceived?

First converts from the preaching of John the Baptist

Luke 3:7-8

7 He then said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance…

First followers of Jesus

Luke 6:46-49

46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say? 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great.”

First believers in the Apostolic churches:

1 John 2:3-4

3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Paul’s call to the Corinthians to test themselves

2 Cor. 13:5

5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Or do you yourselves not recognize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless you fail the test.

II. What distinguishes a genuine Christian from a deceived Christian?

Both hear the word

Both look in to the word

One forgets and doesn’t change

One perseveres and changes

III. What can I do to become a doer of the word?

…The one who looks intently in to the perfect law of freedom, and perseveres in it and not a forgetful hearer but a doer who works… this person will be blessed…

The same way how fake Christian can’t produce a real Christian life, the real Christian cannot produce a real Christian life.

John 15:55 I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.

Matt. 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

1 John 5:3-4 For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden, 4 because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith.

Ez.36:26-27 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances.
