Close Encounter - One of a Kind

Servant of All Message Series

Today we are reading from the book of Mark 9:1-13.

What we are about to read… Is a real Close Encounter… It is a SUPERNATURAL ENCOUNTER…

One that would be branded upon the minds of Peter, James and John forever!

Text: Mark 9:1 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Mark 9:2-3

2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,

3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.

Reference Matthew 17 & Luke 9

We know from Luke’s account in Luke 9:28-29… That the reason Jesus is taking them up the mountain is to get away to pray.

We also know from Lukes account… Luke 9:32… That while Jesus is praying… The disciples are SLEEPING!

Luke 9:29 "And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white.”

1 Corinthians 15:40 “There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another.”

Revelation 1:14-16

14 “The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire,

15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.

16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.”

Exodus 33:20 “But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”

1 John 3:2 “Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

Mark 9:4 “And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.”

Luke 9:30-31

30 “And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah,

31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

Mark 9:5-13

5 “And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

6 “For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.”

7 “And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, ‘This is my beloved Son; listen to him.’”

8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”

12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

Matthew 17:13 “Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.”

Four quick applications.

#1. We want to talk (when we are in the presence of God) - He wants us to listen.

#2. We want to do things - He wants us to worship Him

Matthew 25:21 Tells us that when you have been faithful in a few things… God will give you charge over more things!

#3. We want to stay - He wants us to go!

#4. We want to figure God out - He wants us to walk by faith!

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[a] for those who are called according to his purpose.”
