What about Divorce?

Servant of All Message Series

The world has its own ways... Often those ways are in conflict with God's ways.

Isaiah 55:8-9

8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”

John 3:17 “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

#Text: Mark 10:1-12

1 “And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.”

2 “And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

3 “He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”

4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.”

5 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.”

Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Genesis 2:24-25

24 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
This is the heart of God! That a MAN would leave his father and mother and hold fast to his WIFE... And they shall become one flesh?

This is the heart of God!

Malachi 2:13-16 (NLT)

13 Here is another thing you do. You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, weeping and groaning because he pays no attention to your offerings and doesn’t accept them with pleasure.

14 You cry out, “Why doesn’t the Lord accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! Because the Lord witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows.

15 Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.

16 “For I hate divorce!” says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

Mark 10:5 “And Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.’”

Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

#1 Marriage is One man and One woman

Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’

#2 Marriage is a Uniting of Two People

Mark 10:7

7 “‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,”

8 and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh.

Genesis 1:28 “And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

#3 Marriage is never to be severed

Mark 10:9

9“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter.

11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Romans 7:2-3

2 “For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.

3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.”

Matthew 19:9 “And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”

Third in cases of abandonment

1 Corinthians 7: 12-15

12 “To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her.

13 If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him.

14 For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace.”
