Lead Pastor, Mark Hardacre, discusses the book of Elisha and how to receive a double portion in Part 2 of our Double Portion series.
Stops on the Way to the Double Blessing
1. Gilgal – A Place of _________________________
2 Kings 2:1 (NLT) When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal.
Josh 5:9 (NLT) Then the Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the shame of your slavery in Egypt." So that place has been called Gilgal to this day.
Josh 4:19-22 (NLT) The people crossed the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month. Then they camped at Gilgal, just east of Jericho. It was there at Gilgal that Joshua piled up the twelve stones taken from the Jordan River. Then Joshua said to the Israelites, "In the future your children will ask, 'What do these stones mean?' Then you can tell them, 'This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.'
2. Bethel – A Place of ____________________________
Kings 2:2 (NLT) And Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Bethel. “But Elisha replied, "As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!" So they went down together to Bethel.
Gen 28:11-14,19 (NLT) At sundown he arrived at a good place to set up camp and stopped there for the night. Jacob found a stone to rest his head against and lay down to sleep. As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway. At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, "I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants… He named that place Bethel (which means "house of God").
3. Jericho – A Place of ___________________
2 Kings 2:4 (NLT) Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Jericho." But Elisha replied again, "As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you." So they went on together to Jericho.
Josh 6:2, 20-21 (NLT) But the Lord said to Joshua, "I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors…When the people heard the sound of the rams' horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it. They completely destroyed everything in it with their swords.
4. Jordan – A Place of ______________________________
2 Kings 2:6 (NLT) Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to the Jordan River." But again Elisha replied, "As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you." So they went on together.
2 Kings 2:8-9 Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground! When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away."
Receiving a Double Portion
1. _____________ in Expectation
2 Kings 2:9b-10a (NLT) And Elisha replied, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor." "You have asked a difficult thing," Elijah replied.
2. ________________ Our Eyes on the Master
2 Kings 2:10b-12 (NLT) "If you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your request. But if not, then you won't." As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!" And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress.
3. _________________ Up the Mantle
2 Kings 2:13 Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned to the bank of the Jordan River.
4. ______________ Into Our Calling
2 Kings 2:14-15 (NLT) He struck the water with Elijah's cloak and cried out, "Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" Then the river divided, and Elisha went across. When the group of prophets from Jericho saw from a distance what happened, they exclaimed, "Elijah's spirit rests upon Elisha!" And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.
