Father's Day 2019

Why We Must Honour Our Fathers

June 16, 2019 • Pastor James Richards

If we are going to flourish in life, the Bible makes it clear we must honour our father and mother. In this message, discover the results of honouring your natural father, spiritual father, and Heavenly Father.

Further Scripture:
Genesis 1:1, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Malachi 4:6, Ephesians 4:31-32, Luke 6:35, Hebrews 11:12-16, Joshua 24:15, Exodus 2:15, 1 Corinthians 4:15, Psalm 133:1-3, 1 Timothy 4:12, Matthew 6:9, Psalm 68:5-6, 1 Corinthians 4:15, 11:1

Apply The Word:
Have you honoured and prayed for the father figures & leaders in your life? Have you come under righteous spiritual authority as a true son or daughter? Blessing and protection come when we are under authority. Look at the example of Timothy and Paul (1 Timothy 1:2, Acts 16, Philippians 2:19-20, 1-2 Timothy). Take note of your attitudes and actions in response to spiritual authority (whether a parent and/or leader). Consider the condition of your heart and what needs to change so that you are grateful, responsive, listening, and honouring godly authority in your life.

Have you held on to hurts or pains of the past from a father or father figure? Have you left all pain or bereavement at the cross? The roots of pain of the past can hold you down and bitter roots will bear bitter fruit. Read Hebrews 11:12-16 and note what bad roots you need to cut; of unforgiveness or pain. Forgive and allow the Lord to in turn minister forgiveness and freedom to you too (Luke 6:35-37).

Do you know God as your perfect Father? Do you know His characteristics and have a true relationship with Him? Do you approach Him as a child of God? Read below for 10 Characteristics of our Heavenly Father. If any of these aren’t your experience of God, pray that He will open your eyes to Him so you can live in all that He wants you to experience as a child adopted into the family of God.

1. He has adopted you into His family (Galatians 4:4-5)
2. He leads you to live in freedom (Galatians 4:6-7)
3. He shapes you in your life (Isaiah 64:8)
4. He knows what you have need of and provides for you (Matthew 6:8, 25-26)
5. He knows how to give good gifts (James 1:16-18, Acts 1:4)
6. He is full of grace and mercy towards you (Luke 15:22)
7. He comforts you and gives you peace (2 Corinthians 1:2-4)
8. He is trustworthy even in the hardest of times (Luke 23:46)
9. He encourages you (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17)
10. He loves you (1 John 3:1-3)
