Imagine you could take a peek into your future. What would you choose to see? Your future college or job? If or when you’ll marry?
Sometimes I wish God would tell us what our futures hold. If you’re anything like me, then you like the control of knowing what’s about to happen! That control can grab hold of more than just our desires to know the future. We can want to control our friendships, our schedules, our success in the classroom, our relationship with our parents, and more.
But here’s the tough truth about trying to be in control: that desire means we don’t fully trust that God is in control. Or maybe we just don’t trust Him to make the right decision. We might not say that out loud, but that’s ultimately what our desire for control means.
When we don’t trust God, we can become consumed with the worry of what might happen. But Jesus didn’t die on the cross and rise again only for us to not trust in His promises!
Thankfully, God gives us grace in the midst of our control issues. He tells us not to worry about what might happen. He cares about us more deeply than we’ll ever know, and He is working through everything we experience to help us become more like Him.
Whatever you desire to control, know that God has your back. He’s in control, and He doesn’t want you to worry. We may not know all the details about the future, but we know God loves us enough to die for us and to promise us eternal life now and forever. He is Someone we can trust even in the unknown.
• What aspects of your life do you try to control?
• Read Psalm 107:1 and 147:5. How does knowing that God is good and all-knowing affect the way you view the things you want to control?
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)
