Opposing The Proud

The Destruction of Pride

August 21, 2022 • Stephen Putbrese • Obadiah 1–9

While pride is typically viewed as an undesirable trait and off-putting in others, we almost never see it in ourselves. The reason is that pride is inherently deceptive, but also carries in itself inherent destruction. As the ancient saying goes, "Pride goes before a fall." As we begin the book of Obadiah, we'll see the devastating impact of pride in through the example of the nation of Edom. God opposes the proud, not because he is insecure, but because only the humble can receive his favor and be set free from the trap of pride.

August 28, 2022 • Stephen Putbrese • Obadiah 10–15

In week one, we saw the inherent deception and destruction of pride. While those two aspects of pride are more well-established and observable, we often miss another aspect of pride - its judgment. What do we mean by judgment? Because pride sets itself up in critique and comparison, it is constantly making moral judgments of those around us. However, what we fail to realize is that in making these judgments, we are simultaneously judging ourselves. This teaching will explain how to break the judgmental cycle of pride and not fall into ways of the world.

The End of Pride

September 4, 2022 • Stephen Putbrese • Obadiah 15–21

Throughout Obadiah, we've seen the deceptive and destructive nature of pride. While we've diagnosed it in ourselves, we've yet to give the full antidote to it. What is the best treatment to kill pride and prevent its return? The answer is found in a specific biblical doctrine. This doctrine isn't always received well, but when it's rightly understood, it destroys pride. It's at the heart of the story of not only Obadiah, but whole Bible. What is it? The Doctrine of Election. This teaching will show how God's sovereign grace frees us from pride and makes us truly humble.
