In Isaiah 1, and as a backdrop to the entire book, Isaiah uses two main metaphors for the nation of Judah: rebellious children and unfaithful wife. In both cases, there are real consequences for their actions and attitudes, but also the offer of restoration if they would just repent - be cleansed and obedient to God.
