Like a surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from a person’s body, so Jesus calls us to “gouge” out the parts of our lives that lead us to sin and disobedience. Life is very similar - even when we have patches of stability and sunny joy, there is almost a guarantee that some storm of difficult circumstance will soon roll in. When faced with fear -inducing waves and winds, Jesus calls us to look to Him and take courage that He is bigger than the storms and will give us the strength that we need.

We live in the busiest time in history that humankind has ever know. Jesus invites those who are weary and burdened to another way of doing life - a way that is easier and comes with burdens that are comparatively light.

Jesus: Friend of Sinners

February 14, 2016 • Peter Mueller

Many people have the perception that Jesus only cares or wants to be close to people who have their act together and are somehow nearly perfect. The reality is that the Gospels portray Jesus as someone who was a “friend of sinners”. This is seen in today’s story as Jesus has dinner with the tax collector Matthew and even calls him to be one of his disciples.
