Jesus is finishing his teachings on judgment finishing with this metaphor intended to bring our eyes back onto ourselves. When we hear this, we often think of other’s “fruit” or actions. But Jesus intends this to be applied to you personally.

Sometimes what is happening topside and inside are not on the same page. The same can be true of us. Our actions do not always reflect the message we intend to send to others. Jesus is contrasting values to expose truths. And he starts with some directives intended for us to take ACTION with. Your behavior topside comes from what is happening below deck in your mind, heart, and soul.

You may be in a spot like that; you’ve got skills, you’ve got vision, you’ve got passion, you love Jesus, and you feel like you aren’t making an impact, or you’re unnoticed, or you stuck.
