Giving to the Lord comes from our sense of gratitude for the salvation He gives us. The contributions go toward the physical things of the kingdom. In ancient Israel, God's people contributed from their blessings to the Lord for the building of the Tabernacle and its various components. In Jesus' time, even he was financially supported by his followers. As the church spread the gospel message, financial contributions were taken to support the traveling messengers, care for their needy, and provide the materials needed to teach and share the teachings of Jesus.
