Seven Deadly Sins

Envy

October 13, 2024 • Jason Sharpe • James 3:14–16, Proverbs 4:23, James 4, Genesis 4:2–9

In this message on envy and jealousy, the destructive nature of these emotions is explored through scripture and insight. Proverbs 4:23 urges believers to guard their hearts, recognizing that jealousy stems from a restless and discontent spirit. C.S. Lewis called envy "the great leveler," as it either seeks to bring others down or level everything to nothing. James 3:14-16 warns that jealousy brings disorder and evil, and Genesis 4:2-9 shows how envy led to Cain’s deadly actions against Abel. Pastor Jason Sharpe emphasizes that jealousy is far more dangerous than often realized, and it blocks the ability to love and serve others. Ultimately, jealousy is a heart issue between the individual and God, and confessing the problem is the first step toward healing and restoration.
