JOHN USED THREE THEMES THROUGHOUT THE FIVE CHAPTERS;
OBEDIENCE, LOVE AND TRUTH.
A SPIRIT CONTROLLED MIND KNOWS AND UNDERSTANDS TRUTH,
A SPIRIT CONTROLLED HEART FLOWS IN LOVE,
AND A SPIRIT CONTROLLED WILL INCLINES US TO OBEDIENCE;
THERE ARE BASICALLY THREE MOTIVES FOR OBEDIENCE;
WE MUST OBEY,

A SLAVE OBEYS BECAUSE HE MUST...
AN EMPLOYEE OBEYS BECAUSE HE NEEDS TO OBEY...
BUT A CHRISTIAN OBEYS HIS FATHER BECAUSE HE WANT TO OBEY...
A CONNECTION WITH THE 3 LEVELS OF MATURITY MENTIONED IN 1 Jn 2:12-14
2:12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name’s sake. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.
THREE TYPES OF CHRISTIANS, ACCORDING TO THEIR MATURITY LEVELS.
THE “LITTLE CHILDREN” WHOSE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE AND EXCITEMENT REVOLVES AROUND THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THEIR SINS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN.
THE 2ND LEVEL OF CHRISTIAN MATURITY IS THE YOUNG. THEY ARE STRONG IN GOD’S WORD AND HAVE OVERCOME THE DEVIL (Vs 14).
THE LAST GROUP IS THE “MATURE” WHO KNOW CHRIST. THESE PEOPLE, WALKING IN CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.
THIS BOOK DEALS WITH WORLDLINESS.
WORLDLINESS IS NOT SO MUCH A MATTER OF ACTIVITY AS IT IS AN ATTITUDE.
WORLDLINESS NOT ONLY AFFECTS YOUR REPSONSE TO THE LOVE OF GOD, BUT IT ALSO AFFECTS YOUR REPONSE TO THE WILL OF GOD.
1 Jn 2:17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
JOHN EXPOSES THE WORLDS SYSTEM WHICH USES THREE DEVICES TO TRAP CHRISTAINS.
LUST OF THE FLESH, EYES, AND PRIDE OF LIFE.
FIRST, FRIENDSHIP OF THE WORLD DEVELOPS:
James 4:4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
THEN THE CHRISTIAN BECOMES SPOTTED BY THE WORLD:
James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
THIRDLY, THE BELIEVER BECOMES CONFORMED TO THE WORLD:
Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
FOURTHLY, HE BECOMES CONDEMENED WITH THE WORLD:
1 Cor 11:32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
GOD WAS WARNING HIS FAMILY ABOUT CONFLICT BETWEEN LIGHT AND DARKNESS, LOVE AND HATRED, AND TRUTH AND ERROR.

THERE ARE THREE MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF AND APOSTATE
HE IS UNGODLY (Vs 4)
HE TURNS GRACE INTO LASCIVIOUSNESS (Vs 4)
HE DENIES THAT JESUS IS LORD (Vs 4)
ENOCH PROPHECIES ABOUT THE DOOM AND JUDGMENT ON THE UNGODLY.
14 It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
HE GIVES THREE THINGS THAT CAUSE PEOPLE TO BACKSLIDE.
HE USES 3 PEOPLE AS EXAMPLES TO TEACH US. (MEN ENOCH REFERED TO) (Vs 11)
THE WAY OF CAIN, THE ERROR OF BALAAM, AND THE REBELLION OF KORAH.
CAIN, HIS HEART WASN’T RIGHT... HE WOULD NOT CORRECT IT.
1 John 3:11 For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; 12 not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.
DOCTRINE KEEPS HEART RIGHT. WHEN WE ARE ASLEEP TO THE TRUTH WE ARE IN TROUBLE.
BALAAM... HE SOLD OUT FOR MONEY...
HE SACRIFICED HIS FAITH TO GET MONEY... MONEY BECAME MORE IMPORTANT THAN GOD’S WILL.
KORAH... HE GOT INTO PRIDE. HE WANTED TO BE THE LEADER.
THE REBELLION WAS A LUST FOR POWER.
Vs 12-13 HE USES FIVE WORD PICTURES FOR THIS APOSTASY.
THE EARTH – “LIKE HIDDEN ROCKS – UNSEEN DANGERS”
THE AIR – LIKE CLOUDS WITHOUT WATER – OFFERING FALSE PROMISES AND CARRIED BY THE WIND OR EVIL SPIRITS.
THE TREES – “LIKE TREES THAT ARE DEAD TO THE FRUIT OF PROFESSION AND DEAD TO THE ROOT OF POSSESSION
THE SEA – “LIKE WILD WAVES – PUTTING FORTH WASTED EFFORTS
THE STARRY HEAVENS – “LIKE WANDERING STARS—AIMLESS IN THEIR COURSE.
THE CONTRASTS ARE;
THAT INSTEAD OF DANGEROUS ROCKS, WE CAN BE LIVING STONES;
INSTEAD OF WATERLESS CLOUDS, WE CAN BE A SOURCE OF LIVING WATER;
INSTEAD OF DEAD TREES, WE CAN BE TREES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS;
INSTEAD OF RAGING WAVES, WE CAN BE LIKE PEAEFUL RIVERS;
INSTEAD OF WANDERING STARS, WE CAN SINE AS THE STARS FOREVER AND EVER.
OUR PICTURE OF JESUS IN JUDE IS “OUR SPIRITUAL ANCHOR”
WE CAN KEEP OURSELVES IN THE LOVE OF GOD. WE CAN BUILD OURSELVES UP ON OUR MOST HOLY FAITH BY PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT. (Vs 20-21)
WE CAN LET THE WORD OF GRACE BUILD US UP, AND WE CAN KEEP LOOKING FOR CHRIST’S RETURN.

Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either—women didn’t know how to be women, men didn’t know how to be men. Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men—all lust, no love. And then they paid for it, oh, how they paid for it—emptied of God and love, godless and loveless wretches. 28-32 Since they didn’t bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose. And then all hell broke loose: rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing. They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating. Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, fork-tongued God-bashers. Bullies, swaggerers, insufferable windbags! They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives. They ditch their parents when they get in the way. Stupid, slimy, cruel, cold-blooded. And it’s not as if they don’t know better. They know perfectly well they’re spitting in God’s face. And they don’t care—worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best!
