Hebrews

Hebrews 1:1-3

October 21, 2018 • Paul Mowery

As we begin a new study in the book of Hebrews, we are dealing with Christians that have allowed their priorities to get out of order. Pressure and disappointment were causing some to turn their attention and devotion away from Christ towards other things. The writer of Hebrews begins to lay out how Christ is better than anything that a religious world has to offer. Join us as we receive insight concerning the superiority of Christ.

Hebrews 1:4-14

October 28, 2018 • Paul Mowery

Many followers of Christ have had their walk with Christ derailed by painful experiences that have come into their lives. It is easy in those moments to make decisions that are rooted in emotion rather than truth and logic. Frequently those emotions will ultimately take us away from the will of God. Join us as we finish chapter one of Hebrews, to learn how to correct our perspectives.

Hebrews 2:1-4

The great threat to the son or daughter of God is not suddenly finding ourselves in the middle of a moral collapse, but rather finding ourselves slowly drifting from our passion for Christ. The opening verses of Hebrews chapter two are valuable, for they tell us why we drift and how to cure it. Join us in our study as we discover why we are prone to wander from the God who loves us.

Hebrews 2:5-18

The stumbling block keeping many Jews in the first century from believing that Jesus was the Messiah, was that He was so ordinary. What the writer of Hebrews does for us in the second half of chapter two, is to tell us why the Messiah had to be made like us. Join us to learn how God’s plan for salvation was from eternity past.

Hebrews 3:1-6

November 18, 2018 • Paul Mowery

How easy it is to become impressed with our devotion, our church, or some other aspect of our spiritual life. These things are good, but they should not be what we set our attention upon. When we surrender the greatest, in order to have what is just good, we are making the same mistake that the Hebrews who had turned to Christ were being tempted to make. Join us in the opening verses of Hebrews 3 as we learn what is to be supreme in the life of the Christian.

Hebrews 3:7-19

November 25, 2018 • Paul Mowery

As we finish chapter three of Hebrews the author writes with a sense of urgency. He urges the reader to understand the grave importance of dealing with their disappointment with God. The author reaches into Israel’s distant past and reminds his readers of that generation that came out of Egypt and what happened when they became disappointed with God. Join us in our study of Hebrews as we learn that nothing good will come out of our private war with God.

Hebrews 4:1-10

In the Old Testament Israel was given two “rests." They had a time of rest, the Sabbaths and they had a place of rest the Promise Land. The writer of Hebrews uses the example of ancient Israel, of those who failed to enter what God had given to them. The writer points out that these Hebrew believers in his day were about to make the same mistake. Even today we see many Christians who aren’t enjoying the rest that God has given, which isn’t a time or a place, but a person. Join us in our study of Hebrews chapter 4 to discover our place of rest.

Hebrews 4:11-16

The Lord in His mercy has provided to us a resource that has the power to change the course of a human life. Yet as we survey the landscape of the American Church, we repeatedly see the turning away from this invaluable source of strength. Join us as we study the final verses of Hebrews chapter 4 to gain a greater appreciation for God’s powerful Word.

Hebrews 5:1-10

December 16, 2018 • Paul Mowery

The priesthood for the children of Israel was central to their faith. They understood that they could not go directly to God, but they needed a God ordained representative. For Israel, it required someone from the tribe of Levi. But now we are being reminded by the writer of Hebrews that there are two different priesthoods ordained of God and one is superior to the other. We learn that Jesus is of the line of priests that are superior to anything that Levi had to offer. Join us in Hebrews 5 as we take on the complexity of all of this,  and once we understand, it should cause our hearts to burst forth in thanksgiving.

Hebrews 5:11-14

December 30, 2018 • Paul Mowery

One can have length of life and not experience depth of life. On the other hand, one can have depth of life while having a short life. Length of life is not necessarily an indication of someone being a mature person nor is being in the church for your whole life a guarantee that you’re a mature Christian. Join us as we finish our study in Hebrews chapter 5 as we are given the signs of spiritual immaturity.

Hebrews 6:1-12

January 6, 2019 • Paul Mowery

Coming to Hebrews chapter 6 we come to one of the most difficult passages in all the Bible to interpret. Hebrews 6 has been the battle field for a lot of church wars. Our approach to these opening verses will not be to continue the warfare, but to seek what the writer is pressing on the readers concerning what the disciple should have their attention on. Join us as we seek to gain a clearer understanding on what we should be focused on.

Hebrews 6:13-20

January 13, 2019 • Paul Mowery

In times of pain, when God isn’t bringing a way of relief, with our limited understanding we think God is limited in His care for us or in His power to perform. The Hebrew believers were finding themselves struggling with this very issue. Doubts were increasing, and thoughts of abandoning a commitment to Christ seemed logical. How do we as the followers of Christ navigate the stormy waters of life? Join us as we look at the final verses of Hebrews chapter 6, to gain insight for overcoming the problem of pain.

Hebrews 7:1-17

January 20, 2019 • Paul Mowery

As we arrive at chapter seven of Hebrews, the author points out if the religious system of the Old Covenant could make us perfect before God, it would not have been replaced. There is always a constant struggle in the church of losing our focus on what saves us. Join us as we once again are reminded that it’s a person and not a system that saves.

Hebrews 7:18-28

January 27, 2019 • Paul Mowery

Chapter seven of Hebrews reveals the glorious truth that Christ accomplished what the Law of Moses could never do, He has brought us near to God. God has changed Priesthoods! Man’s path to God does not run through Levi or Aaron, but through Christ who is of a different order of priests. God Himself has declared that it is through Christ that we have been brought to a place of perfection.

Hebrews 8

February 3, 2019 • Paul Mowery

Chapter 8 of Hebrews is a fresh reminder that what a person has with just a simple faith in Christ alone is better than any other religious expression. When you are in possession of the best, you don’t exchange it for the inferior. The writer of Hebrews once again encourages us to stick with a trust in Christ alone.
