The Meaning of Marriage

October 1, 2015 • Terry Evans, Brian Hommel • Ephesians 5

Marriage has a way exposing things about you that even you yourself may have been unaware of all along. And so, within weeks after your wedding day, the amount of exposure that you start feeling can be a bit unnerving. But God knows what he is doing in the way that he has designed marriage. And so, we can find a lot of hope in having the healthy marriage that we desire by making sure that we understand the design and the Designer of this profound mystery called marriage.

Consumer vs. Covenant Marriage

October 8, 2015 • Terry Evans, Brian Hommel • Genesis 15, Ephesians 5, Philippians 2

In a consumer relationship, my needs and what I want are more important to me than my spouse’s needs and the relationship itself. However, in sharp contrast with our culture’s consumer-model mentality, the Bible teaches “that the essence of marriage is a sacrificial commitment to the good of the other.” This comes from the Biblical concept that the marriage relationship is a covenant relationship.

Marriage Requires Grace

October 15, 2015 • Terry Evans, Brian Hommel • Genesis 3, Colossians 3, 1 Peter 5

One of the beautiful aspects of living in the context of a relationship is the fact that it forces us to learn the practice of forgiveness. Those who never experience the struggle of having to forgive others often fail to grasp the depth of the way in which Christ has forgiven us. The command to forgive can only be carried out in the context of relational community. And perhaps there is no better theatre for the art of grace and forgiveness than the home of a husband and a wife.
