Bring Them Up

The Role of Parents in Ephesians 6:4

September 1, 2024 • Jason Whitley • Deuteronomy 6:4–7, Proverbs 1:7, Matthew 22:37–39, Psalm 138:2, Ephesians 6:4

As parents, we are entrusted with a profound responsibility—shaping the hearts and minds of our children in the ways of the Lord. In our journey through Ephesians chapter 6, we are reminded of the divine call to not only refrain from provoking our children to anger but also to actively engage in nurturing them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. This dual charge compels us to replace outdated, ineffective parenting methods with principles rooted deeply in Scripture.

Our primary focus is to embody the joy of the Lord, ensuring that our children perceive Him as our greatest treasure. This perception begins in the home, as we model godliness, self-control, and affection. The Scriptural mandate for fathers emphasizes this, underscoring their role as the head of the household. Yet, this is a call to all parents to cultivate a home environment that mirrors the nurturing relationship Christ has with His church.

Practical Steps in Parenting:

1. Training in the Lord: Our goal is to raise children who not only survive but thrive under the nourishment of the Lord’s teachings. This training extends beyond mere survival; it involves educating them in the wisdom and knowledge of God, preparing them for life both now and in the future.

2. Discipline and Instruction: These are not merely about correction but about holistic training—shaping the will and the way our children think and act according to godly standards. Discipline means more than punishment; it's about setting a path of righteousness they can walk from childhood into adulthood.

3. Living Out the Scripture: As Christian parents, we harness the Word of God as our primary tool in parenting. It is vital for our children to see us live out the scriptures, making decisions and solving problems through the wisdom it provides.

Each of these efforts points back to one core objective: to raise children who know, love, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. This task is indeed daunting, but we are never alone. The Holy Spirit empowers and guides us, providing the wisdom and strength we need.
