The same message that appeals to the university professor studying in a library also touches the life of the day laborer who’s cleaning up discarded drywall in order to feed his family. It touches the woman who works as an OB-Gyn at Morristown Hospital, to the woman who is dealing with the emotional collateral damage of having aborted her child. The gospel is available to diverse people in every walk of life. From the Anglo, to the African, to the Latino, regardless of circumstances. There is one title for God that Paul uses in Philemon that, up till his conversion to Christ on the road to Damascus, Paul would not have used: the title, “Father.” A devout Jew might refer to God as Elohim, El-Shaddai, El-Elyon, Adonai, and with great care, as YHWH. But not as Father. And yet in Philemon 3, he refers to God by that very term. What changed?
