The shepherds’ role in the Christmas story is often depicted as an endearing picture, but was it as simple as it often seems? Was it just the announcement by the angel of the good news of Jesus’ birth and their trip to see this miracle? Or is it possible that they saw even more? Did their role as shepherds prepare them to see things that night that eluded others for decades? This morning we’ll dig deeper and see how the Good News may have been clearer to them than to most.

Christmas Outtakes - Part 3

Sometimes it’s easy to almost skip over Joseph in the Christmas story. Not much is known about him, and his role seems fairly small – he isn’t even Jesus’ real father! And yet, as we’ll see in today’s “outtake,” Joseph endured a horrible, shame-filled experience that would have been easy to just run away from. But God had other plans, and Joseph discovered that even in our darkest moments, God is there with us and for us, and God offers us that same assurance!

Christmas Outtakes - Part 2

December 5, 2021 • Randy Hageman • Hebrews 11:1, 1 Peter 2:22, Luke 1:26–38, Matthew 6:9–10, John 12:37

Many times, when people think of Mary, the mother of Jesus, they have this almost romanticized view of this ideal, even perfect woman, who had the privilege of raising Jesus, the Son of God. We almost see her as royalty, but that’s actually pretty far from the picture that we actually get in the Bible, of a peasant teen doing her best to cope with a seemingly impossible situation. And maybe the Bible’s picture is really best for us, because it makes her much more real and relatable, as we’ll see this morning.

We’re starting our “Christmas Outtakes” series looking at an older married couple named Elizabeth and Zechariah. He is a priest, and her family tree traces her lineage back to the very first priest, Aaron. But beneath the surface they are a couple without children, and maybe their faith isn’t as strong as it might seem. Join us today as we explore their real story and what it says to us today.
