Jesus has gone before us to clear the way of sin and death so that we can be with Him forever. He has disarmed our enemy and freed us from the power of sin and the sting of death. Therefore, we should face the future with confidence, knowing the Shepherd has provided and will always provide what is needed. He has a plan to work all things according to His will. Thesis in one word – assurance.

Most Bible teachers see David’s metaphor describing the filling of the Holy Spirit. If accurate, this is a regular experience of spiritual abundance that parallels Paul’s command to “be being filled with the Holy Spirit.” The variety of applications for oil pairs well with the variety of applications of the Holy Spirit in our lives. When we are filled by the Sprit, we overflow. The big idea in one word – empowerment.
