The story of Christmas is suspiciously perfect. On the surface it seems almost too perfect to be true and for many, the story has been relegated to fable, myth or folklore. But what if the story is true? If true, it carries intense meaning for this life, as well as eternity.

The birth, life, and death of Christ center around a seemingly uncertain time. Yet, it was in this context of uncertainty that he promised his disciples an unshakable peace through the coming of the Holy Spirit. this peace would not come as a result of peaceful circumstances. Peace is a gift from God that always precedes a change in circumstance. Through salvation Christ offers peace NOW.

Finding joy in the midst of difficulty is a challenge for all. In the message of Advent, however, we find that God is actually the one who rejoices over us. It is His joy that breaks through as we wait with expectant hope. This joy takes on the form of good news for all humanity that a savior has come to renew lives and fulfill the expectant hope.

Advent is about expectant hope, but that involves waiting, which is something few do well. What do we do as we wait for Messiah to come? We prepare room for him by rightly ordering the affections of our heart. Though it can be a painful process, reordering our love through repentance creates a pathway in our lives for the King of glory to come.

The Advent season is all about expecting the arrival of the King. As with any season, the difficulty comes with waiting and not losing hope, especially when it seems there is no hope to be found. Fortunately, God always has a way of showing us that he is not only present in our expectancy, he partners with us to make sure we do not lose hope.
