Every Eye Will See Him

Revelation 1:7-8

December 22, 2024 • Richard Caldwell Jr. • Revelation 1:1–3

Introduction:

The book of Revelation IS the revelation of Jesus the Messiah.

It is the capstone of all God’s revelation in Scripture — God’s final word on all that is coming.

The book of Genesis tells us how it all began, the book of Revelation tells us how it all ends.

And as God reveals how it all ends, God is pleased to exalt His Son.

God is pleased TO BE REVEALED in His Son, TO BE KNOWN in His Son, and to set forth the fulfilment of His plans and purposes FOR ALL THINGS in their relationship to His Son.

That is what He is doing in this book. The theme of this book is the revelation of Jesus Christ, and specifically, the Revelation of His glory that is set forth through His second coming.

In verses 4-6 John has just extolled the Lord Jesus Christ for who He is and what He has done for us.

In verses 7-8, John looks to the time when the whole world will acknowledge what we have come to know.

It will be the time when Jesus returns from Heaven to the earth — the time of His second coming.

THE TIME WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD WILL SEE HIM IN HIS GLORY AND AUTHORITY.

I.             THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS COMING (vs.7a)

This verse begins with “behold” or “look,” He is coming with the clouds.”

And the very way that John gives this announcement points, once again, to the identity of the One who is coming.

A.  THE IDENTITY OF THE ONE COMING

When John says “BEHOLD HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS” it takes us to the book of Daniel.

Now, when Jesus of Nazareth was born — when the Son of God came to earth — He answered the expectations of those who were watching for Him based on the promise of God’s Word.

God’s people, taking God’s Word at face value, believing in predictive prophecy, were looking for the coming of the Messiah into the world.

ESV Luke 2:25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel." 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.

ESV Matthew 2:1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 "'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him."

GOD’S WORD WAS LITERALLY FULFILLED IN THE FIRST COMING OF CHRIST.

Well, John is alerting us to the fact that God’s Word will be literally fulfilled in the SECOND COMING OF CHRIST.

And the second coming is spoken of in the Old Testament Scriptures, just like the first coming was.

ESV Daniel 7:13 "I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

So, John — speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ — identifies Him with the one like a Son of Man who was coming with the clouds of heaven.

JESUS IS THE COMING ONE.

He came the first time from Heaven, He is coming again from Heaven. In both of those comings He is fulfilling the promises of God and the hopes of everyone who believes those promises.
