Names of God

Part 6: Shepherd

November 13, 2022 • Pastor Luke Uran • Psalm 23

As one of the most familiar passages in the whole Bible, Psalm 23 is often rightly read at funerals as a source of comfort. But there’s much more here, if we take a little time to understand sheep and shepherds—and why this is such a beautiful reminder of who God is.

Part 5: El-Roi—The God Who Sees Me

November 6, 2022 • Pastor Luke Uran • Genesis 16:11–14

Hagar was confused, used, abandoned … and pregnant. Yet God saw her, heard her, comforted her and gave her a promise. Whatever our difficult situation, God knows each of us just as well.

Part 4: Abba-Father

October 30, 2022 • Pastor Luke Uran • Galatians 3:23—4:9

The Hebrew term "Abba" helps us understand God’s love as a father’s love for his child. Even if we have had a negative experience with an earthly father, this understanding can change the way we pray and relate to our Heavenly Father.

Part 3: Jehovah-Jireh

October 23, 2022 • Pas • Genesis 22:1–14

“God will provide.” Often we employ that phrase when concerned about our comfort. When we are obedient to God, he provides courage to face the unknown. He fills in the details. He gives us faith to do something our world might see as crazy.

Part 2: El Shaddai

October 16, 2022 • Pastor Luke Uran • Genesis 17:1–8

The Hebrew term El Shaddai means “All-Sufficient One” and “God Almighty.” It could also mean “God of the mountain.” In a familiar Old Testament story, a 99-year-old man learns what those names mean for him and his people. They mean the same for us today.

Part 1: Jehovan-Nissi

October 9, 2022 • Pastor Luke Uran • Exodus 17, John 12:27–33

The Hebrew term means “the Lord is my banner.” In battle, a banner was a rallying point, a symbol. As we open a new series looking at the meanings behind some of the names of God, this provides a good starting point—and a reminder that we are never alone.
