The Gift of Fasting - Matthew 9:14-17

October 17, 2021 • Andrew Mastriano • Matthew 9:14–17

Andrew Mastriano - St. George's Campus The Gift of Fasting - Matthew 9:14-17 (cf. Isa. 58:6-7) Fasting is cultivating a hunger for God by every now and then removing good distractions. Fasting forms us that we might “let go of an appetite in order to seek God on matters of deep concern for [the] other, myself, and the world." “More than any other discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us. This is a wonderful benefit to the true disciple who longs to be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ. We cover up what is inside of us with food and other stuff.” - Richard Foster “The weakness of our hunger for God is not because he is unsavory, but because we keep ourselves stuffed with “other things”. Perhaps, then, the denial of our stomach’s appetite for food might express, or even increase, our soul’s appetite for God.” -John Piper “ What we hunger for most, we worship.” - John Piper Formational Practice: Fasting Welcome to Sunday Service at Fellowship Memphis! The Gift of Prayer - Luke 11:1-13

October 10, 2021 • Claude Atcho • Luke 11:1–13

Formed By God The Gift of Prayer - Luke 11:1-13 The mention of prayer makes most of us feel guilty. Prayer however is a gift of grace. Redeemed by the Son, filled with the Spirit, we have free access to the Father. That’s what prayer is: talking and hearing from our Father in heaven anytime, anywhere, about any and everything. The Lord’s Prayer Luke 11:1-13 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.” And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Formational Practice: Prayer Welcome to Sunday Service at Fellowship Memphis! The Gift of the Inner Life - Psalm. 139

October 3, 2021 • Claude Atcho • Psalm 139

Claude Atcho - St. George's Campus Formed By God The Gift of the Inner Life (Solitude) - Psalm. 139 Not only is life hard, life can be a blur. With so much going on, it’s hard to slow down and look inward and take stock of the deep questions. It’s easy to live life on the surface—without examination or reflection. The problem is that the unexamined life means life is happening to us and we have no sense of grounding or reflection about how God is working in us and around us. When we step away from the noise of our calendars, social feeds, and frantic activities, we can hear from God and center on his nearness and know best how to enter the fray of life tethered to him.
