Episode 101 | The Crisis Of Western Culture

Season 2, Episode 11

October 12, 2022 • Autumn Gardner, Hunter Beaumont, Philip Moore

Autumn and Hunter are joined by special guest Philip Moore. Philip is a pastor in the Paris area and serves the Acts 29 Network as Vice President for Global and Director of Europe.

They discuss the fact that Western culture (Western Europe, North America, Australia) seems to be going through an “identity crisis.” Philip brings his perspective as a pastor in a secularizing country and points us to two themes he is seeing across Europe, which are also true in America: (1) Hyper-individualism doesn’t just have an impact on individuals and their spiritual well-being. It is also having massive social and political consequences. (2) “Emotional reasoning” has become the main way we think things out, which leads to inconsistency and instability.

Having identified these two themes, we then discuss what it looks like to live in a different way as Christians in this kind of culture.

Episode 165 | Politics, Part 1: The Purpose Of Politics

April 3, 2024 • Autumn Gardner, Hunter Beaumont

When we talk about “politics,” we usually mean elections and debates about public issues involving our government and “politicians.” But we can’t think well about governmental politics unless we understand “politics” in a bigger way, as an aspect of our inter-relational existence created by God. Hunter and Autumn discuss two paradigms to get at this bigger meaning of politics. The first paradigm utilizes the biblical movements of creation, fall, and redemption to elucidate the intention, complication, and redeemed modality of politics. The second paradigm relies on the biblical terms shalom, justice, and righteousness to inquire how a redeemed body politick, the Church, can pursue wholeness as the purpose of “politics.”
