The Young Man Elihu

October 27, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 32—37

Elihu has waited patiently while the older friends have said their peace, but he cannot sit by another minute and listen to their advice or interpretation of this tragedy. Elihu wants them all to hear what he has to say. He thinks that they have all been wrong. As you study, notice what observations he repeats and what is a new information. Does he have the right take on the situation? Or have they ALL "missed the boat?"

Job's Summary Defense

October 20, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 23—31

Job is still wishing he could present his case directly to God. Bildad partially summarizes what the others have been saying regarding Job's innocence and guilt. Job restates his request to deal directly with God and gives his idea of what seems "fair," in other words, what he would do if he was God.

Where is Justice? Where is God?

October 13, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 19—25

Job's three friends - Zophar, Eliphaz and Bildad - all weigh in one more time with their opinions about Job. They show a bit kindness than before, but Job replies that all he really wants is to bring his case before God.

God Has Hemmed Me In

October 6, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 15—18

Eliphaz rebukes Jobs attitude and words, but then expounds with many words that seem far from comforting and include a bit of judgment. Job's response includes what he would say to one of his friends in the same situation and it would be way more encouraging! God has hemmed him in with friends who seem like his enemies.

Round Two (a) – Job responds to Zophar & Eliphaz Calls Job Out

September 29, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 12—15

In this first section of Round Two of speeches, Job withdraws from his friends and his hope for deliverance, and towards wanting a one-on-one with God. His suffering is becoming less his focus, and wondering where God is and why He is allowing all this becomes his main concern.

Speeches, Round One: Job / Zophar

September 22, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 9—11

When Job responds to Bildad there seems to be a shift in his thinking. In chapter 9 he couldn’t answer God but in chapter 10 he announces that he finds fault with God. He says no one could be a judge between them in chapter 9, but in chapter 10, he summons God to court. Then Zophar speaks and tells him, "You think you are innocent but really God is cutting you some slack."

Speeches, Round One: Job / Bildad

September 15, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 6—8

Job responds to Eliphaz that a man’s friends should be kind to him so he doesn’t forsake fear of God. He wishes that God would let him die and quit staring silently at him. Bildad corrects Job by letting him know his belief that blessing correlates directly with obedience. So what is true? God sometimes has plans which fit His kingdom purposes which don’t fit the world we can see, understand and hope to control.

Speeches, Round One: Job / Eliphaz

September 8, 2019 • John Morrison • Job 3—5

Job’s pain is so deep that after a week of wordlessness, he cries out. Eliphaz believes suffering comes to those who deserve it because God knows things that the rest of us don’t. How do you respond to Eliphaz’ correction if you are Job?
