Biblical Counseling 101

Class 1: Why Counseling in the Local Church?

December 3, 2017 • John Morrison

God has called the church to equip one another to use the Scriptures to help ourselves, our families and others to address the problems of life that we all encounter. Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ. Ephesians 4:15

Class 2: What is Biblical Counseling?

December 10, 2017 • John Morrison

People are designed by God to reflect His image, but life is hard. Sometimes we need help seeing how we can reflect God’s image in all situations. By applying biblical truths to our lives by faith, we become more like Christ in our attitudes, thoughts and behaviors, no matter what the situation. That is being a good reflection!

Class 3: Biblical Sufficiency and the Medical Model

December 20, 2017 • John Morrison

The Bible is sufficient to give us all we need to know to respond properly to any non-organic challenge or struggle we might encounter. The Medical Model and other kinds of non-biblical counseling tend to view people as patients and do not see the Bible as any help at all with non-organic challenges that are common to man.

Class 4: Video of a Live Counseling Session (no audio)

In this first-session video, notice how Randy Patten demonstrates the 6 steps of biblical counseling as he counsels “Trey and Deb”. (Not available online. Please check with the Counseling Office to borrow a copy. Contact us at http://counseling@fbcva.org.)

Class 5: Step One - Building Involvement

July 6, 2020 • John Morrison

Can I trust you? Do you really care about me? Can you actually help me? People with real and messy lives need help. Learn how to cultivate attitudes and relational habits that encourage people to open up and draw near. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Class 6: Step Two - Giving Hope

January 30, 2018 • John Morrison

Learn to cast a vision of what God can do through His Word and His Spirit in His people’s lives. For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4

Class 7: Step Three - Gathering Data

January 14, 2018 • John Morrison

Most data gathering occurs while you are hearing their “story.” Being a great listener is the key to gathering data. Learn how to develop good listening skills and avoid common pitfalls. Develop skill in asking the appropriate kinds of questions for the situation – extensive or intensive. And remember these words of warning: He who gives an answer before he hears, it is folly and shame to him. Proverbs 18:13

Class 8: Step Four - Interpreting Problems Biblically

January 22, 2018 • John Morrison

Once data is gathered, it must be interpreted. Learn how to clarify the problem as the counselees see it and then use Biblical Terms to identify root problem. Biblical Problems have Biblical Answers.

Class 9: Step Five - Providing Biblical Instruction

February 4, 2018 • John Morrison

As one of our experienced counselors says, Biblical instruction means “instilling an understanding of God’s Word into another’s heart so as to stimulate faith and obedience in all areas of life.” Learn how to instill God’s Word biblically, accurately and appropriately.

Class 10: Step Six - Assigning Well-Targeted Homework

February 18, 2018 • John Morrison

Once instruction has been given, homework is required to help people change. Knowing something is one thing, but doing something about it is quite different. Learn why to give homework as well as the specific kinds of homework to give. (Homework resources included.)
