The Lord's Prayer

A Four-part Small Group Study

Hallowed be Thy Name

Don den Hartog • Matthew 6:5–13

To pray for God’s name to be “hallowed” is to pray for the Kingdom to arrive on earth. To pray for the Kingdom to arrive on earth, is to pray that the present environment of heaven will be brought to this earth. The Kingdom does not come until the King comes. Prayer facilitates anticipation. Anticipation facilitates prayer. Knowledge facilitates both prayer and anticipation.

Give us this day our daily bread

Don den Hartog • Matthew 6:11

We pray for today’s needs. Most of the world does not have today, tomorrow’s provisions. As we prepare for the coming kingdom, we also have daily needs for the here and now. God invites us to ask for them.

Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

Don den Hartog • Matthew 6:12

Forgiveness is a relational issue. Confession is specific, not general. Confession is not exhaustive. Forgiveness of others is extended by remembering our own wrongdoing.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

Don den Hartog • Matthew 6:13

The opportunity to reign in the kingdom is paramount to understanding our battle in the spiritual realm. The conclusion of the prayer provides future hope in present battles. The “ruler of this world” is overcome (Rev.12:12) by the King of kings! “Thine is the kingdom…” Spiritual victory is impossible apart from daily prayer for it. 1 John 5:14
