Christ-Centered Optimism

March 22, 2020 • Pastor Ben Cross

This sermon, we'll continue our series through the book of Philippians. In some ways, Paul’s situation in Rome, while writing his letter to the church in Philippi, parallels what is happening to us in this pandemic. He’s confined to his residence under the threat of death, with no freedom to be out and about. He’s under house arrest in iron chains with a trained killer on the other end—an elite Roman guard. Paul’s chains are a kind of metaphor for our own pandemic "chains" with a killer on the other end—COVID-19. Last message, we learned why Paul rejoiced in his troubles. The core passion of his life was happening--the gospel was advancing through his faith story and through fellow believers who were emboldened by his example to share Christ more openly with their neighbors. This sermon, Paul looks to the uncertain future and we'll see why he is confident to continue to rejoicing even in his chains. Paul's example provides real and relevant wisdom for us as we navigate through this pandemic.

This message we’ll continue in our study of Philippians. The big idea of this whole book is Paul encouraging us to stand firm, even when things around us are uncertain. What a perfect book for us to be studying in 2020! We’re starting into Chapter 4 of Philippians this sermon, in which we learn that as Christians we have everything we need to stand firm in an uncertain world because of knowing Christ and being found in Him. Christ-Centered Perseverance

This sermon in Philippians is all about perseverance. It’s amazing how the Bible is so timeless and relevant to life today, in ways we couldn’t have even pictured when we planned this series on Philippians. As we finish chapter 3 of Philippians, Paul reminds us to follow his example. He reminds us that we are citizens of heaven, and we have a place with God beyond this life. It’s living with this perspective that allows us to persevere with our eyes fixed on God….no matter what comes our way. Read Philippians 3:15-4:1 to be ready for this message.
