Missional Leadership

1 Peter 5:1-5

May 27, 2018 • Pastor Dan Collins

As Jesus led, he had twelve apostles and an inner circle of three. It was Peter–one of his inner circle–who repeatedly denied him and swore that he never met Jesus.

After Jesus rose from the dead, the Gospels record a personal interaction between Peter and Jesus. I can’t imagine what it must have felt like to be Peter at this moment. We get to be a fly on the wall as Jesus and Peter talk, and it’s clear that later when he wrote the book of 1 Peter, he has this moment with Jesus in mind.

When it comes to leadership, often people feel that it’s something reserved for the elite or specially-gifted. As we’ll see from Peter’s example, God uses everyday people to do extraordinary things when we are willing to say “yes” to him.

In fact, as Christians, we all have marching orders from Jesus. In his final instructions before returning to heaven, Jesus commanded his followers to do the essential task of making disciples. (Matthew 28:18-20)

To make a disciple means to help someone know and follow Jesus, and to do this requires leadership! That’s why this sermon will be tremendously helpful to you as we learn how to lead like Jesus.
