Defending Faith in Babylon

Pastor Jon Palmer

July 12, 2020

Babylon is intoxicating at times. Its promises are endless, its possibilities abound, and its pleasures are alluring. With all these qualities, Babylon and its citizens often mount a great assault on true Biblical faith. “That’s old school!” “You’re weak if you believe that.” “How could anyone believe THAT!” On and on and on the insults are flung. Yet, the Bible clearly states that we need to be ready to give a defense for the faith that we have. In this message, Pastor Jon shares that defending our faith isn’t won on intellect, but on living out our identity.

Revelation 3:14-22

“Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea: Thus says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the originator of God’s creation: I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth. For you say, ‘I’m rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,’ and you don’t realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. I advise you to buy from me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be zealous and repent. See! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. “To the one who conquers I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. “Let anyone who has ears to hear listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Matthew 23:25-28

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside of it may also become clean. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of impurity. In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Isaiah 29:13

The Lord said: These people approach me with their speeches to honor me with lip-service, yet their hearts are far from me, and human rules direct their worship of me.

Titus 1:16

They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

2 Timothy 4:3-4

For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.
