This is God

Pastor John Brunette

August 25, 2024

Our journey through the book of Romans continues. Pastor John leads us through the conclusion of chapter 11 where the Apostle Paul appears to take a breather, a pause of sorts, to reflect on the wonder and largeness of God. He moves away from theology - the study of God and His ways, to doxology - giving glory, praise, and honor to God forever! The question that drives our focus today is, “What are you hanging onto, even for dear life, this day?”

Romans 11:33-36

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid?” 36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.

For Adult Homes & Groups

1. How would you or those in your group describe experiencing the presence of evil? The presence of God? Describe those instances when you sensed evil or God’s presence.

2. Read Romans 11:33-36. What words or phrases jumped off the page as you read these verses? What do these verses tell us about God?

3. In verses 34-35, three questions appear Job-like (see Job 41:11). Why would the Apostle Paul stop to ask these questions at this point in this book?

4. What do these verses tell us about ourselves or the world in which we live?

5. Application: In light of these truths, I will. . . (take some time to share your ‘I will’ statements before closing in prayer).

For Families with Kids

1. Read Romans 11:30-36 together, and then read 3:9,19-20. Who is all under sin? Circle all that apply:  Jews  Gentiles  You  The World

2. Read Galatians 3:21-29. What is the purpose of God’s Law (see v.24)? Who can be saved through faith in Jesus (see v.28)?

3. Paul ends the first eleven chapters of Romans with a big praise to God (doxology). We are reminded that God doesn’t owe us anything, but out of His mercy and love gives us everything. Pick some songs, and make a playlist on your phones to play this week that specifically praises God and thanks Him for His holiness and goodness.
