Jesus always speaks with purpose. He starts with this Beatitude because it is the key to the rest, to the entire Sermon on the Mount in fact. If we are not poor in Spirit, we serve a kingdom ... just not the Kingdom of Heaven.

If you live according to the first 7 Beatitudes, the outcome of your life will garner opposition. The world is intimidated by gentle, merciful, peacemakers. Example A: Jesus. If we follow his steps, we can expect similar pushback from our culture. The good thing - "Blessed are the persecuted" is ours to hold in this life.

The world needs peace. Too many of us are not willing to work for it. We think it will come naturally or that we can bully our way in and strong-arm peace. Neither of those are true. Peace only comes from the Prince of Peace. Pick up your cross, follow Him, and start making peace.
