unrighteousness develops real momentum. Men eventually revel in their sin and celebrate
their fierce independence from God. This momentum of sin is slowed only by the direct intervention of God.

Chapter 2 presents a topical order of formation of life, giving priority to man’s role as steward of creation. The earth is the stage for human history, and the drama begins with the definition of two genders and the establishment of procreative marriage.

The book of Genesis is foundational for the rest of the Bible. Its opening chapter does something of incalculable importance: it lays down the basis of a biblical worldview. It provides to humans a meta-narrative, a big story into which our lives can be fitted and from which they can derive meaning, purpose, and value.
