ALL IN #28 Ephesians 4:25

Lying is Bad

October 18, 2020 • Jason Carson

Read Ephesians 4:25, Proverbs 6:17, and Proverbs 12:22. What is God’s Word saying to you in this verse? What is God’s heart for His people?

Why do we lie?

The whole concept of lying is speaking something that isn’t true in order to deceive. Of the 10 types of lies discussed in the sermon, which types of lies are the most deceptive (or sneakiest) for you? (For reference, here’s the 10 types of lies from the sermon: Half-truth, little white lie, cover, exaggeration, silent, escape artist, credit, cheating, hurtful, self-deception).

Is it ever morally right to lie? What about to protect someone’s life? What about to protect someone’s reputation? What about to get someone out of trouble?

Why is it important to tell the truth even in small matters? How should you respond when someone asks you whether you like a meal they made you or not? Or if they ask you if you like their outfit or hairstyle?

Does being truthful require sharing your every thought? Why or why not?

To defeat lying, you need to admit you’re a liar, then pray for forgiveness, then pray for strength to speak truth, and then commit to telling the truth in every situation. In this 4 step process, where do you get stuck. What step do you need to take this week?

TOGETHER GROUP QUESTIONS As a review of the whole passage, read Ephesians 6:10-17. What is God’s Word saying to you in this passage? What have you learned? What sticks out? What has helped you? Discuss the sword of the Spirit. Why is this such a critical piece in the armor of God? What does it do for you? What does it protect you from? How is it an offensive weapon? Name one situation/ trial you are going through currently in life right now, and discuss HOW you can apply the Word of God to that situation (Ps. 119:105). Have the group share specific Bible verses that can be applied to each person’s circumstances. Read Matthew 4:1-11. Break down the 3 temptations Jesus faced, and how they are similar to things we face on a daily basis. Discuss how Jesus responded to each temptation. How is the Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word) useful to you? (There’s dozens and dozens of answers- have each person in the group share at least one!) As we have gone through each of the 6 pieces in the armor of God (belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the Gospel of peace, helmet of salvation, shield of faith, and sword of the Spirit)… have each group member pick one of those items that they would like prayer for in this upcoming season.
