DNA: Discipleship in Action

Is Sunday Enough?

August 23, 2020 • Blake Lorenz

Is Sunday enough? Jeremiah 12:5 states, "If you cannot run with the footmen, how will you run with the horses?". The statistics on divorce, pornography, drug addiction, and other common issues are the same with people who attend church and those who do not. This statement is not to condemn the church but reveal where we are at; however, it is important to recognize the state of the field. What is the church doing to remedy these problems? Jesus gives us the answer. He came to make disciples. He did not just give a sermon and leave, but he gave us a lifestyle to imitate. The goal of the church is make disciples who go after Jesus.

The Power of Decisive Moments

Last week we addressed the issue of Sunday. Is Sunday enough for the church? According to the stats between Christians and non-Christians, it is not. We have a need for further discipleship. What does Jesus do in his own ministry? What is the DNA that Jesus wants to pass on? Jesus gives the answers in his decisive call: “Then He said to them: Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”--Matthew 4:19 I do not know what decisions that you as an individual will be called to make when following after Jesus. I know that many of them will be inconvenient to your own goals, life strategies, or financial success, but I cannot stress it enough that He is worth it. And who knows, maybe he is calling you to do something today, and if you listen and follow after him, we may be talking about your decisive moment 50 years from now.

Trust the Process

Trust the process of His transformation. When Jesus says in Matthew 4:18, that I will make, he is saying there will be evidential change. That what exists in your head will move to your heart and affect your actions. It will be a substantial transformation. Jesus is intentional about this transformation. He sets this out as a goal from the beginning. If you follow Him, you will be changed by Him.

Maturity in Christ

What does maturity in Christ look like? The book of Acts gives insight into understanding this concept. They did three things: They obeyed. They waited and they were filled. The fruit of the disciples doing these things is that they made more disciples, and they were intentional about making disciples. In like manner, you have a calling to make disciples, teaching them the knowledge of Jesus.
