December 18, 2022 • Brett Baggett • Hebrews 2:14

DOCTRINE. Those who have been given the privilege of hearing the gospel must not neglect such a great salvation.

I. WHAT WILL YOU LOSE IF YOU NEGLECT SUCH A GREAT SALVATION OFFERED IN CHRIST?

I) You must take great care to listen, understand, and believe what Christ has revealed about His salvation (v. 1a).

II) If you do not take great care to listen, understand, and believe you will drift away from Christ (v. 1b).

II. WHAT WILL YOU SUFFER IF YOU NEGLECT SUCH A GREAT SALVATION OFFERED IN CHRIST?

I) Those who neglected the Old Covenant revealed by angels received a righteous punishment for their sins (v. 2a).

II) Those who neglect the New Covenant revealed by Christ will not escape God’s wrath against sin (v. 3a).

III. WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST IN THE GOOD NEWS OF THIS GREAT SALVATION OFFERED IN CHRIST?

I) You should trust in the good news of this great salvation because Christ Himself preached it (v. 3b).

II) You should trust in the good news of this great salvation because Christ’s apostles, who were both eye and ear-witnesses, continued to preach it (v. 3c).

III) You should trust in the good news of this great salvation because God worked signs, wonders, and miracles through His apostles as evidence that they were telling the truth (v. 4).

QUESTION. How can I make sure I do not neglect such a great salvation offered to me in Christ?

ANSWER 1. Repent, believe on Christ, and be baptized. Christ says, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mk. 16:16).

ANSWER 2. Labor to listen to, read, understand, and believe all that God has chosen to reveal in His Scriptures, remembering they are all ultimately about Jesus. Hebrews 2:1 “We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard,”

ANSWER 3. Praise God for all that He has done, is doing, and will do for you in Christ. Psalm 95:1 “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!”

ANSWER 4. Meditate frequently on the great salvation Christ has bought you.

Psalm 145:5 “On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.”

ANSWER 5. Live daily for the glory of the One who purchased for you this great salvation. Titus 2:14 “[Christ] gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”

ANSWER 6. Labor to help others not neglect this great salvation. Urge unbelievers to go to Christ and be saved. Acts 2:40 “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
