BIG IDEA: You must walk by the Spirit because there is a war raging in your chest between the Spirit and the flesh. This passage also shows us what the works of the flesh look and by contrast the fruit of the Spirit. In addition, God teaches us that those who truly belong to Christ are freed from the Law’s curse as well as the reining power of the flesh.

I. You must walk by the Spirit (v. 16a).

II. You must walk by the Spirit because that is the only way to keep away from fulfilling the lusts of your indwelling sin (v. 16b).

III. You must walk by the Spirit because there is a war raging in your chest between the Spirit and the flesh (v. 17).

IV. Though the war rages, in Christ, you are not under the Law's curse (v. 18).

V. What do the lusts of the flesh look like when they become the works of the flesh? (vv. 19-21a).

VI. What if these works of the flesh are someone's habitual practice? (v. 21b).

VII. What does the fruit of the Spirit look like when one is walking by the Spirit? (vv. 22-23).

VIII. The flesh is no longer a reigning power in those who belong to Jesus Christ, because by His grace saints have crucified the flesh (v. 24)
