II. WHY IS THE DEATH OF A BELIEVER GAIN? (v. 21)
Philippians 1:21 “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

I) CONSIDER, BROTHERS, WHAT FREEDOM YOU WILL HAVE FROM SIN AFTER DEATH (selected)

(I) After death, you will become free from any stain of sin (Ephesians 5:27)

(II) After death, you will be free from the indwelling of sin (Romans 7:23-24)
Romans 7:23-24 “23 sin. . .dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”

(III) After death, you will be free from any temptation to sin (James 1:14)

(V) After death you will be free from the possibility of sin (Revelation 3:12)
- Revelation 3:12 “The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it. . .”

(VI) After death, you will be free from the presence of sin (Revelation 21:27)
Revelation 21:27 “But nothing unclean will ever enter [that Holy City], nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

II) CONSIDER ALSO, BROTHERS, WHAT UNITY YOU WILL HAVE WITH HOLINESS AFTER YOUR DEATH (selected)

(I) After death your souls will be made perfect (Hebrews 12:23)
Hebrews 12:23 “the spirits of the righteous made perfect”

(II) After death you will walk in perfect holiness (Isaiah 35:8)
Isaiah 35:8 “And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.”

III) CONSIDER ALSO THE HEAVENLY CITY AND THOSE WHO DWELL THERE, ALL OF WHICH YOU WILL ENJOY AFTER DEATH (selected)

(I) After death you will go to live in Christ’s Father’s house (John 14:2)
John 14:2 “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”

(II) After death you will go to live in the sunlessly bright city which has the tree of life, the Lamb as its lamp; in this city we will worship God in the unadulterated splendor of holiness (Revelation 21:22-23)
Revelation 21:23 “And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
Revelation 22:2-3 “...on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.”

(III) After death you will be surrounded by the elect angels and other saints made perfect (Hebrews 12:22-23)
Hebrews 12:22-23 “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, [23] and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,”

(IV) After death you will be reunited to your loved ones who died in Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14; 2 Samuel 12:23)
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 “13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.”
2 Samuel 12:23 “Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

IV) CONSIDER, BROTHERS, THE SHINING FACE OF CHRIST WHICH YOU WILL SEE AFTER YOUR DEATH (selected)

(I) The day you die you shall be with Christ in paradise (Luke 23:43)
Luke 23:43 “[Jesus] said to [the thief on the cross], ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.’”

(II) After death you shall see Jesus face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12)

Revelation 22:4 “They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.”
1 Thessalonians 4:17-18 “We will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

V) CONSIDER, BROTHERS, THE REST THAT YOU WILL HAVE AFTER DEATH
Revelation 4:13 “And I heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!’”
Hebrews 4:9 “There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God”

WHY ARE WE DOING SHEPHERD SCHOOL? 2 Timothy 4:1-6

August 9, 2021 • Brett Baggett • 2 Timothy 2:1–6, 2 Timothy

Why are we doing Shepherd School? I. So that you would be strengthened by grace (v. 1) 2 Timothy 2:1 “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,” II. So that you would be taught the truth (v. 2a) 2 Timothy 2:2a “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men,” III. So that you would be equipped to teach others (v. 2b) 2 Timothy 2:2b “who will be able to teach others also. IV. So that you would be a good soldier of Jesus Christ (v. 3) 2 Timothy 2:3 “Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” V. So that you would please your King (v. 4) 2 Timothy 2:4 “No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.” VI. So that you would live your life according to the the rules and so be rewarded (v. 5) 2 Timothy 2:5 “An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.” VII. So that you would exhaust yourselves in planting and watering, and therefore most enjoy the fruit that God grows (v. 6) 2 Timothy 2:6 “It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.”

THE AUTHORITY OF THE SCRIPTURES (2021): 1 Thessalonians 2:13

August 16, 2021 • Brett Baggett • 1 Thessalonians 2:13

I. THE SCRIPTURES COME THROUGH MEN (v. 13a) 1 Thessalonians 2:13a “And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us,” II. THE SCRIPTURES COME FROM GOD (v. 13b) 1 Thessalonians 2:13b “you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God,” III. THE SCRIPTURES WORK IN BELIEVERS (v. 13c) 1 Thessalonians 2:13c “which is at work in you believers.” IV. HOW THE WORD IS TO BE READ AND HEARD PREACHED Thomas Watson (1620-1686), in his book The Ten Commandments, has a sermon that seeks to answer the question, How is the word of God made effectual for salvation (justification and sanctification)? His answer is I) by reading the Word, and II) by hearing the Word preached. How the word of God may be read so as to be effectually working in us who believe: (1) That we may so read the Word that it may conduce effectually to our salvation, let us have a reverend esteem of every part of Scripture. (2) If we would have the written Word effectual to our souls, let us peruse it with "intenseness of mind." (3) If we would have the written Word effectual, we must bring faith to the reading of it; believe it to be the Word of the eternal Jehovah. (4) If we would have the written Word effectual to salvation, we must delight in it as our spiritual cordial (i.e. pleasant tasting medicine). (5) If we would have the Scripture effectual and saving, we must be sure, when we have read the Word, to hide it in our hearts. (6) If we would have the written Word effectual, let us labor not only to have the light of it in our heads—but its power in our hearts! (7) When we read the holy Scriptures—let us look up to God for a blessing. How the word of God preached may be heard so as to be effectually working in us who believe: (1) If you would have the Word preached effectual, give great attention to the Word preached. (2) If you would have the Word preached effectual, come with a holy appetite to the Word. (3) If you would have the preaching of the Word effectual, come to it with tenderness upon your heart. (4) If you would have the Word effectual, receive it with meekness. (5) If you would have the Word effectual, mingle the Word preached with faith. (6) If you would have the preaching of the Word effectual, be not only attentive in hearing—but retentive after hearing. (7) If you would have the preaching of the Word effectual, reduce your hearing to practice. (8) If you would have the Word effectual, beg of God that he will accompany his Word with his presence and blessing. (9) If you would have the Word effectual, if you would have the Word work effectually to your salvation, make it familiar to you.
