The people of Ancient Corinth had certain ways of doing things which either helped or hurt the church's image. Today we're going to talk about things we do in our culture that either help or hurt the church’s image. One thing that helps the church’s image is when we come together for the good of everyone!

Here's what that means for us today. God's people aren't guaranteed an easy life because we're called out into a wilderness, not an oasis. But God's leading his people to the promised land. We need to make sure that we stay focused on him.

Our Rights are Important but the Gospel is more Important

Paul said to the Corinthians, “I’m an apostle just like the others. And just like the other apostles who receive support from their labor, I have the same right to be supported by my labor. In fact, every person has the right to be supported by his or her labor. But rather than fight for this right, I laid it down because the gospel is more important. Here's the message: Our rights are important, but the gospel is more important. When should we fight for our rights, and when should we lay them down? Here's what I want you to know this morning: Your rights as a human being are connected to your obligations.

Your Character is More Important than College or a Career

In the movie The Adjustment Bureau, agents work for the Chairman to make sure that people stick to his plan. One wrong move and they'll miss his plan for their lives. Many of us believe that there’s only one perfect plan for our lives here in this lifetime. If we choose the wrong college or career, then we’ll miss out on the plan that God has for our lives because it’s all about what we do, not how we do it. But here's the truth. Your Character is more important than college or a career because neither college nor a career will last, but your Character will. God's will for your life is to reflect his image. When you reflect God's image, you will find the good life.

Sex in Marriage Should Be Selfless, Mutual, and Frequent

We have a natural desire to be fruitful & multiply which is good. For this reason, sex in marriage should be selfless, mutual, and frequent. In marriage, one man and one woman become one flesh. Husbands, don't starve the marital body. Wives, don't starve the marital body. Marriage pictures our relationship with God which means you can’t be unfaithful to your spouse and faithful to God at the same time. When you’re faithful to your spouse, you’re faithful to God at the same time.

Some of the Corinthians believed there was a radical disunity between their bodies and their souls, just like oil and water which meant what they did with their bodies had no impact on them. But Paul said, "Wait a minute! What you do with your bodies will affect you, just like what you do in the Body of Christ will affect the entire Body of Christ. There’s a radical unity between the body of Christ and Christ himself. It’s like chocolate milk, not oil and water. In the same way, there’s a radical unity between the body of each person and that person himself or herself. This matters because the idea that there's a radical disunity between body and soul is making a comeback.

Who You Are Determines What You Should Do

Take 2 minutes to write down a description of yourself to someone who doesn’t know you. Raise your hand if the first thing you wrote down is 'Christian.' Chances are that's not the first thing you wrote down. We forget who we are which means we need to be reminded of who we are. This matters because who you are determines what you should do.
