A more difficult part of discipleship is obedience. Selective obedience is disobedience and disobedience is multiplied when we make excuses. If we aren’t careful, we begin to believe the narrative we construct around ourselves; then we lose perspective about truth and lies and we erode our relationship with God and with others.

Who do you love? Is your love for God enough to wait on His timing and on His strategy? Too often, Saul was more in love with himself than with God. Spiritual character is revealed under pressure. Our affection is seen in our absolute trust. Affection indicates priority, where love indicates emotion. Affection is the devotion we have to someone that makes us change our plans, seek out the object of our affection, and maybe even say no to some things in order to say yes to other things.

Repentance is a “no conditions” conversation with God where we realize that something that we value – an activity, a lifestyle choice, a pursuit – is in the way of our ability to love God. Whether beginning a relationship with Jesus or recalibrating our spiritual journey, repentance is turning away from something destructive that we value and turning towards God and His plan for our lives.
