Today, many people misunderstand the purpose of marriage. Duane Sheriff teaches why it is important to understand God's design for marriage rather than listening to the culture's misconceptions. Marriage does not exist to make us happy, complete, or to escape troubles. Instead, it should be a relationship centered around God's principles. According to Colossians 2:9-10, we are already complete in Christ and shouldn't look to another person to make us whole. This scripture teaches that in Jesus "dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily" and "you are complete in him." Marriage will not fix our personal issues or make us whole. Proverbs 3:13 says, "Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding." True happiness comes from wisdom and understanding, not from a spouse. Create a home centered around God, where both partners seek to follow God's guidance. Understanding and living God's purpose for marriage leads to blessings and fulfillment.

Genesis 2:18, God created marriage for companionship and partnership, saying, “It is not good that the man should be alone.” Marriage is a covenant and not merely a contract. Malachi 2:14 highlights the seriousness of this commitment, stating, “The Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously; yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant.” Believers who misuse or misunderstand this covenant can cause harm and damage not only to themselves but to others as well. If individuals are not ready to fully commit, it is better not to marry. Seek marital counseling and understand marriage before committing. It is essential to marry for the right reasons, as divorce can result in emotional and spiritual consequences.

In part 4 of "The Purpose Of Marriage" series, Duane Sheriff teaches the foundational truths of marriage and its importance in our culture. Just as Eve was formed from Adam's rib while he slept, the Church was born from Christ's pierced side at the cross. This prophetic illustration is found in Ephesians 5:30-32: "For we are members of his body, his flesh, and his bones...This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the Church." Just as Adam and Eve became one in marriage, believers become one with Christ in salvation.

Marriage is a type of Christ, and the church is vital to what God is doing today. In part 5, Duane Sheriff teaches why God created marriage and its purpose. He believes we will see a massive return to the institution of marriage. This return will bring healing, even for those hurt by the church. Here are three essential building blocks for those who are married, those who are single but intend to marry, and our young people as we train and teach them: knowledge, work, and experience. Firstly, knowledge is an essential building block. Hosea 4:6 states that God's people are perishing for lack of knowledge. Many Christians, especially young people, struggle to explain what marriage is and understand its purpose. The second building block is work. Many people mistakenly think marriage will work out on its own, especially Christians who believe God put them together. Even if God led you together, you will face challenges and need to work on your marriage. The third building block is experience. Experience teaches valuable lessons and helps us grow. No success story exists without knowledge, work, and experience. Athletes, doctors, and mechanics all require these elements to succeed, and marriage is no different. There is hope even after a divorce. God can bring beauty from ashes if we repent. Jesus will restore our hearts, heal us, and prepare us for future relationships. God loves you and will heal any brokenness, making you whole so that you can experience the beauty of His holiness.
