Jesus Said What?!

Part 5 - Jesus believed sin was serious?

May 28, 2023 • Eddie Bowman • Judges 20:16, Romans 6:23, Luke 15:7, Philippians 2:5–11

1. The Condition of Sin

Judges 20:16 - Out of all these people, 700 choice men were left handed; each one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

Matthew 5:44 - "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

Romans 6:23a - "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God..."

Matthew 5:27-30 - You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

2. The Trajectory of Sin

Luke 15:7 - I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Luke 15:10 - In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

Luke 15:24 - For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. So they began to celebrate.

Amos 5:12 & 21-24 - "For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins...I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings. I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

3. The Solution to Sin

Philippians 2:5-11 - In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross! Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
