The Church is designed by God to serve as His hands and feet, bringing healing, compassion, and restoration to a broken world. This calling includes—and perhaps especially—the responsibility to care for those who carry deep wounds and lasting scars that can limit personal growth, emotional health, and spiritual development.
Through the Companion Recovery Model, the Church is equipped with a compassionate and practical framework for ministry. This model provides shared language, narrative, and strategic thinking that allows those who have been hurt to feel seen, heard, and supported as they process their pain. Rather than offering quick solutions or minimizing suffering, the model emphasizes presence, empathy, and accompaniment, reflecting Christ’s example of walking alongside the wounded.
The Companion Recovery Model also recognizes the impact of trauma on those who serve. It intentionally supports peers, caregivers, and ministry leaders by promoting intentional self-care, healthy feedback loops, and thoughtful attention to the prevention and care of secondary (vicarious) trauma. By strengthening those who provide care, the model helps sustain long-term ministry effectiveness and emotional and spiritual resilience.
Through this approach, the Church becomes a place of safety, healing, and restoration, where both those who are wounded and those who walk beside them can experience renewal, growth, and hope within a Christ-centered community.
