Joshua: Week 17

In our closing week of our study of Joshua we will see Joshua continue to call the people of Israel to remember the faithfulness of Yahweh and for that to be their motivation for keeping His commands. He will charge them to choose whom they will serve and He will point to the true and better Joshua..Jesus Christ.

In these closing chapters of Joshua we see the second and third speeches Joshua gives to the leaders of Israel and to the entire nation together. We see a familiar passage of scripture in the charge, “Choose you this day whom you will serve!” but when considered in context we see the faithfulness of God recounted and the reasonable choice made, but we also see the necessary help of the better Joshua, Jesus Christ in helping us do what we say we will do.

In this last section of the book, Joshua will address the people of Israel in three speeches broken down into three chapters. He will recount the faithfulness of God to his people and call the Israelites to faithfulness and obedience to God.

In the preceding weeks we have seen boundary lines and allotments as Israel possesses the land. This week, we will see the Cities of Refuge established, the Levites claiming what was promised to them, and a celebration of the tenacious, unrelenting faithfulness of Yahweh.

The Israelites have been commanded to take possession of the Promised Land that is being distributed to each tribe by lot. Again, it will be Israel’s choice to trust and responsibility to obey. The Lord is calling them to conquer not to compromise. The Israelites will have to chose to walk by faith in Almighty God or to walk by sight as they perceive the physical might of the peoples they will encounter. Will they chose to trust HIM to do as He promised or trust in their own strength, wisdom, and ability?
Joshua: Week 12

Following the conquering of the North and South, God instructs Joshua to go ahead and allot the land to the tribes of Israel. It will be each tribe’s responsibility to obey the Lord and conquer the territory they are allotted. This list of towns, villages, rivers, and other geographical markers are the tangible description of God’s promise fulfilled to His people! The Israelites will wrestle between believing in Yahweh’s mighty power that they have seen and experienced and believing in their own strength and ability when they see huge armies in front of them as they are sent to conquer their lang. Will they trust that God will drive out their enemies?

Last week we saw the conquering of the South and this week we will see the conquering of the North but ultimately what we are seeing is that God is faithful to keep all of His promises; every last one of them. Joshua’s life of steady obedience and God’s enduring, unwavering faithfulness are a testimony to us and to the people of Israel, who are seeing once again,Yahweh’s strong right arm is no metaphor.

This week we will see Joshua and the Israelites come to Gibeon’s defense, but we will ultimately see it was the Lord who was fighting the battle. At the end of chapter 10, we’ll see the conquest of the South and the way the Lord continues to fulfill the promise to give His people the land.

The book of Joshua teaches us that without God, we cannot win battles big or small. After Israel’s first attempt to defeat the city of Ai without divine instruction and in compromised standing because of Achan’s sin, we will see the fall of Ai after Israel is restored and God’s plans are given and followed.

After the success of Israel’s first victory in Canaan, the opening lines of Joshua 7 have an ominous ring. We will see how one man’s direct disobedience to God affected the entire covenant community of Israel and how nothing is hidden from the God to whom we must give an account.

Having miraculously crossed the Jordan River to the Land of Promise, we see some things take place before the conquest of Canaan. These things were important to Joshua and to the nation of Israel, showing their allegiance and dependance on God.
